I installed an electric fuel pump over a year ago. I like it. Car starts better & I ugraded the fuel line & installed a regulator at the same time. However I have always been worried about if it continues to run if I where to crash or have a major engine problem. Causing a fire. I see Summit & Jegs sell a fuel psi cut off switch that looks like it T's into the oil psi switch. So when oil psi drops it will shut down the fuel pump. So then do you need to put it on a toggle switch also so you can cut the fuel pump on to start the car. Or just let the engine spin over untill it has enough oil psi to override the saftey switch. Whats the proper way to address this problem on a mild bracket car?

If you dont like cranking it put the switch on it
(also if its slow building oil pressure) but otherwise
just run the low oil pressure switch to a relay then
to the pump.... most of us dont even run the low
pressure switch unless its hooked up to the ignition
to kill the engine on a low oil pressure condition
but again alot of us have a master kill switch... JMO

Mr P, thanks for the reply, but dumb question. What would the relay do? Also I bought a Moroso master cutoff, just haven't installed it yet.

I have seen a few crashes especially on the TNT nights when the crazies come out with their 600 HP street cars & blow the tires off & smack the wall. It takes a while before a track worker can get to them sometimes even if they did have a master cutoff.

The relay is to carry the load of the pump... that
little low oil pressure switch cant carry the load
of the pump so you need to run a relay... you just
run the low pressure switch wire to turn on the relay

Ford originally used these inertia activated fuel cut off switches in their cars and trucks. they have since been adapted to road race cars. We installed them in all the Porsches at my old shop. They work real good! http://www.smartracingproducts.com/catalog/electrical.htm

Chrysler used a shut off like that back when we first
started using injection but since dropped them

I was unaware of that. The only draw back I have seen with these switches was big pot holes and blown out tires on production cars. They can and will trip the switches, LOL "I got a flat tire and now my car won't start!"

The pot holes were one of the reasons it was dropped
and in some MINOR bumps(like bumping into a parking curb
it would set off and if you didnt know about it you could
play he11 in getting it running again... IIRC it was
in for 2 years... early 80s

Thanks everyone I am better educated now. I think I will try to get the master cutoff installed today. Fred that inside switch looks like a neat deal. I'll look into that.
