Where would be a place to look for where I could buy color coded wiring in the lengths I need?

I am looking into restoring my own wiring harness, re-soldering all the connections, upgrading the gauge of some of the wires, and possibly a few other modifications..

but does anyone know of a place that sells wiring by the foot where I could buy properly colored wiring to match the OE harness?

I WOULD LOVE TO FIND THEM, specially traced wires, but, in Venezuela is imposible at least on a shop.

I remember have seen on Year One catalog being offered, rolls of them. Maybe Summit have them too

Mostly sure up there some grocery stores will have some, at least the more popular colors and gauges. Check they are for automotive use.

I can find down here reds, blacks, greens, blues, yellows and whites... gauges from 10 to 18, color shade changes with the brand

I would maybe call somebody like Painless or 1 of the other big outfits and see if they sell it. Or if somebody knows where these places get their wire from, call them. Otherwise, I have no idea.

Google automotive wire suppliers etc. You'll be amazed at the selection.

Waytek Wire....I have used them before, for the exact same thing you want to do. They will do 100' Put ups. If I am not mistaken they do have traced wire. Great company to deal with. This was about 3 years ago, hope they haven't changed. Hope this helps.

Yes, Waytek has a very large selection of wire, and will do custom tracing or striping. They also have a large selection of terms, connectors, etc. Only bad thing is they usually have a $5 minimum per line, so sometimes you have to buy more than what you want of an item. I also use Del City ( www.delcity.net )for wire and other items - they usually don't have the line minimums. Also, I don't have it avalible to take a pic - it's on loan - but I made a wire striping block by drilling various size holes through a piece of aluminum with corresponding holes through the top to insert a paint pen. With a little practice and patience you can make a nice looking striped wire without buying a custom 100' roll for 3' of wire.

Sounds like it would be more $$$ to do it yourself than to get one done from YO, yours would probably be better.

I have never bought from them, but they carry it by the foot.

They (Rt 66) sell wire in smaller amounts, but they charge you over twice as much per foot, compared to Del or Waytek, and they didn't list striped.

Do it the way you want - and bring it to the perfection you like.

Just my : I did it using just black and red wires to replace the few that had to be replaced. The "upgradable" wires are black and red anyway, are they?

I found it more helpful to add small flags to the ends/connectors that were not absolutly clear and label them where they have to plug in (or what they are).

After all these years having a 440 I realized that this means having an attitude... and a budget.

On my 65 dart I did the underdash wiring loom (more to go) myself using NAPA brass terminals and 1 ga larger stranded wiring from spools & didn't use any traced wires. Alot of work but it's now new/upgraded/exact lengths and as Swiss Robert said it's the way I want it and for sure cheaper than having a company do it. Unwrap the harness but keep it intact in it's original position w zip ties or something similar as you cut/solder ends 1 wire at a time to get the correct length/routing so you are building up the new harness on the floor right next to the old harness. You make up 1 wire in the new harness then toss the wire that it's a copy of in the old harness until the old harness is down to nothing and you have an exact duplicate w maybe a few custom lengths/circuits depending on your (if any) circuit additions in your new harness.

Yes, I modified my original, unwrapped it, cleaned it up, added some extra wires etc etc. Very satisfying and also cheap. Not as quick as ordering up a new one, but you get what you want and save $$$. I have some pics of a couple of the harnesses I modified in my buildup thread (link in sig below). I added connectors for my MSD, Unilite, and headlight relays etc all with a stock-ish look..
