I'm building an almost stock 383 for my super bee.
I have a year correct short motor already.
The short motor has flat top pistons with no relief and has previously been used with 906 heads.
I will be using stock 68 hi po manifolds and a stock intake, maybe a edelbrock performer but definatley nothing bigger.
Carb is likely to be an edelbrock AVS 600.Cam is likely Mopar 484
So....Heads? Should i go for a 906? or a closed chamber head?Or is it worth buying some of the 440 source stealth heads?
Performance is not a mega priority, but i'd like to make the best of what i'm gonna use.
This is a street car running an auto box and 3.23 gears.I don't want a lopey idle and i'd like some vacuum for my brakes also.
over to you guys....

You probably want a different cam than the 484 then . Get a set of closed chamber heads , you'll have no more than 10.0 if you use a head with around a 76cc chamber.

What do you think for a cam then?
I understand the stealth heads are closed chamber,is this just a waste of money tho and should i just use mopar closed chamber heads?

The MP 284/484 is not a good cam for 3.23s & stock converter; quite lopey, poor low-speed performance, terrible gas mileage. Needs a looser converter and/or more gear in something that heavy. Something like a 214/224 @ .050, .470/.504 Engle works a lot better: much more responsive, better mileage & vacuum, but sounds healthy. My 284/484 pulled strongly above 3000RPM, but wasn't what I consider a good street cam. Cam science has progressed a lot in 30 years.

Thank You for your input,as regards the cam please school me.
I was under the impression that the 484 was just the next step up from a 383 hp cam?is this not the case?
I was going to use the 484 purely because i've got one,i'm open to suggestions

Careful..
There are (2) 284/284 484/484 cams, the original #P4120235 has more overlap (68 vs. 56). For better street-ability use the later one #P5007697 with a stock setup and higher gears such as a 3.23...

Just my $0.00..;)

Hi,
So how do i determine which 484 i've got?
I'm hoping there will be a part number on the cam somewhere.
Thank You to you guys who have dived in so far

I had a 383 Dart that was almost all stock internally and it had the .484 cam. But I had the combo to go with it using 3.91's and a TA 3000 tight 10" converter. I also used headers and the car ran great hitting 12.30's @ 110 on good days. Your Roadrunner is a bit heavier and with 3.23's and exh manifolds I would not use either of the .484 cams. I used the older one and it had a nice lopey idle that I liked. If you plan to stick with the gears and converter you have then definetly rule out the .484 cam. You would want to change the gear and converter and use headers just to start. The .484 has to much overlap (to small lobe seperation #) which will hurt the low end alot in your combo as you plan to do it. You could call a cam company or talk with the guy on hear (Porter I believe is his name and he is good) and have them spec a cam for your combo. Good luck , Ron

I'd dump that cam and carb. That cam likes a lot of gear and converter. It will be a turd. You'd be better off running a factory magnum cam. Your 906's will be fine. Save the money that you would have spent on stealth heads and get a nice intake, carb and headers. As for a cam...get w/ one of the pure stock guys, they have some custom cams that work well w/ combos like yours.

Comp XE-268 would work good with your combo, might not have enough lope for you. just reread your post. Idle should suit you fine. Works good with 906's and 3:23 gears. There are other cams just as good,I the just have experence with this one.

Just advance it when you install it to 102 intake centerline and it should be fine. run the idle about
850 in gear to hold a little more vacuum for the brakes.
