I hope the picture works out ok i think the rear end has backing plate dimension of 59ish i would like to swap it into my 1973 dodge charger and i know i gotta mod the mounting flange. I was wondering if someone knew the year or anything so i know what parts to order as far as seals and bearings.Any help is greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

measure the housing from flange to flange(where the backing plate bolts to housing)

whats the wheel bolt pattern? 5 on 4 1/2"? 5 on 5 1/2"?

look along the bottom of the pinion and get the last 3 didgets of the casting # to tell what chunk you have...741-742-489

if you pull the chunk it will have the yr and gear ratio on the edge of ring gear

measure the spring perches center to center for a better guess of what it ut of

all the gaskets and wheel bearings are the same for a stock 8 3/4 unless it has green roller bearings put on it at some time

the only seal that may change is the pinion seal..depends on the chunk you have as to pinion size

the chunks swap a round expet for the real older ones and matching the carrier to the correct case bearings ect..

that will get you started on IDing it

post the measurement and #s for a better guess

dont forget to sand blast and paint it

You may of measured and inch and change too much, re-check that as previous poster stated. B & E body rears are in the 57ish & change range flange to flange. As you know, in order to put that rear into your 73 would most likely involve perch mods, narrowing the axle tubes, and/or offset shackle drama. If the price is right, and, it's a 489 or 741 casing, grab it just the same. As far as I know, there are no date stampings on the axle housing, anyone? In my deranged opinion, you're better off obtaining a 71 and up B body specific 8 3/4 and do what you see fit with the case and gear ratio of your choice.Hopefully you overmeasured and its a keeper.

looking at the pic,it seems to be sitting upright and the perches are on top of the axle tube

that means its from a truck, the shock mounts may indacate it from a 65-71 maybe

truck housings are the same a c-body housings as far as width

I have a couple 72 4x4 truck with 5 on 5 1/2" WBP and a 67-polara/E-body size IIRC

if its an early truck you may luck up and have a 3.91 sg in it

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

Ok i checked the casting on the 3rd member it is as follows.. 2881489 and flange to flange is 59ish welding perches is no big deal but i was thinkin if the axle is a touch to long i can get wheels perhaps with a bit of less offset im not lookin for concours here im just a poor boy lookin for cheap upgrades. the gear ratio said 3.23 and feels to be a sure grip! so thats great cuz i now have 2.71 open.

its from a truck

59" flange to flange is a truck or C-body

perches are on top of the axle tube and should be 43" centers

489 has a crush sleeve

most likly going to be to wide for your car

how wide flange to flange is the one in you car?

it can be done with rim offset up to a point

That rearend is out of a van. The shock mounts are a dead give-away.

the one in my car is 57.8 according to tech archives and that seems close i just measured mine. According to that tires would stick out half inch per side if the distance between flange and the hub is the same, correct?

be carful in the archives..one of those charts is wrong..

but yea sound like a 1/2" could be done with back set on rims no problems

and may only be 1/4 per side

good luck with the swap
