Bob - I'm in the same situation as yourtself. Family life and kids demanding much more of my time, so I wanted to have something all purpose. I think my Challenger turned out to be a pretty good compromise. Havn't run it yet, but should be good for low 11's or maybe better. And I've had my kids out in it several times this summer. (I almost added a roll bar this winter, but really glad I didn't)
Anyhow, Im sure others will disagree on this, but IMO the 11 second range will give you the most all around fun in a street car. No cage necessary, smoother idle, lower cost to build and easier on parts, no trailers, get in and go without hesitation, family friendly, drive to work or the track, whichever.
Don't get me wrong a 9 second blast is fun, just many more compromises.
I agree with 10secgtx, we are of the transitioning age bracket. We'll be back building the race cars when our kids are older (most likely for them to drive!)

and actually what I'm shooting for....although I prefer old school...carbs through the hood, no a/c, no radio, back seat, no cage, radical bullet to a point....just a local fun ride
I am finding out that I actually prefer building them more than racing them .... crap I must be getting old

What in the hell does age have to do with it. Opinions vary here`s mine............do what you need to do and if you want to go slow then buy the new junk stock offerings and WISH you would have never sold or changed your car cos of a "mid-life mood swing".................

I'd never sell the Old Classic...just get a new SRT. Couple kids...get a Charger then. WAY more room then the Challenger. Also you can pick them up WAY cheaper which makes keeping the other one much easier to handle. ~5k worth of mods, and you can hang with Z06's...in your 4 door family car

You're right its not an age thing, however we happen to be at the age where our children are requiring more of our attention...and as a responsible parent we focus more on their needs than our own. Not sure how wanting a more streetable car for the family means your hanging up your ball sack, but whatever. Back in the day I had a roller cammed 12-1 street car too, and it was fun until it was no longer fun...for me anyway. I also rode crotch rockets when I was younger, and swore I would always have a bike. Havn't had a bike in 15 years. Life happens and we adjust, thats all.
Btw, I don't think anyone is suggesting to trade his hot rod for a mini van here...

Not everybody has as much testosterone as you, Thumper..lol And if you have to ask you dont understand. After so many "mood swings" you finally stay swung..to compromiseing. Unless a guy can afford more than one ride, age and family concerns win out. I'm talking about the "average" week end warrior, but some guys, and you may be one of them, are addicted to the 1/4 mile they whole life. And thats cool too.

Thumper, Tony was just referring to the fact that alot of us here are in that time period where the kids are in sports every night. It really does make you lose interest in race cars, I never thought it would but it does. You guys have really helped me see things from different perspectives. My son is my life, and he has zero interest in cars but that's alright. I think when he gets closer to driving age he will take up a much bigger interest in cars. The funny thing is, I keep thinking about selling the Dart to build something more streetable and family friendly but I really won't have any spare time to do it LOL.

dont take this the wrong way but i hope your ready for him to be a much smaller part of your life soon. there will come a point when he wants his freedom from you. not saying you wont still be close, but theres going to be alot of times when you will see very little of him and it will be his choice.
i think you would be surprised how much you would enjoy having an old muscle car thats not as fast but can easily replace the family car if you want to run to the store, go to ball games and shuttle the kids around. my wife and i hardly ever drive one of our pickups or our pt when we run around together. my main mode of transpertation is my 68 satellite 4 speed. i dont remember when i dove something else to work.

I understand guy`s and respect the fact that you have to do what you have to do but it`s just not gonna happen in my life time that`s all. Been a gear head since I was 10 years old, went to different tracks watching my uncle race and NOTHING feels better to me(mechanically that is )than jumping in my dart to get a cup of mud or fetch car parts thumpin down the road.....NOTHING. But, I`m single and live my life day-by-day which could explain some of my interesting events in the last few years. Last thaught; went to Irwindale 1/8th mile track last night and hate the fact that 80% of the cars are new SLOW cars........guess it`s a sign of the times.........for SOME.

I have a street/strip car, it was built for that purpose, nothing more and nothing less. I put a roll bar in it this summer, over the winter I mini tubbed it and installed a new Dana. It will probably slow down some from a combination of less gear and more weight, but thats ok. I like the 4.10 gear compared to the 4.30s, its more fun to drive.
I live out in the country and there is really nothing close to drive to. It was driven to work last week, 17 miles each way and did fine with the exception of the fuel issues, that hopefull will be fixed when it goes out again. The tempature was around 95 when I left work and it barely ran over 180.
I struggled with the roll bar decesion but it came down to being safe. It has gone 6.61 @ 102 in the 1/8. Plus no one really goes anywhere with me when I drive it. My wife thinks its to hot, loud and rides to rough. My youngest stepchild just turned 17 and really has no interest in cars, all he wants to do is play drums.
I will at some point buy or build a driver, something with air and a little pep. The Dart will always be what it is now, a hot rod.

After 21 years of Drag Racing it seems that I have just completely lost interest in it, mostly due to the fact that we run around every day with our 10 year old boy's sports. The only thing we do is go get ice cream in it every now and then.
I think the best thing for me to do is to start over with a clean slate, I've seen street cars with a roll bar that didn't have the cross bar so you can utilize the back seat, with kickouts at the bottom of the main hoop for strength, or maybe a bolt in bar. Front bucket seats that tilt forward to get in the back seat, electric window kit, maybe a stick shift tranny , street tires maybe fat ones at all 4 corners, or bigs and littles??
It would have to be a mild pump gas motor so maybe a small block turbo that could be driven anywhere and still be fast. I want something I can DRIVE, with the family in it, no slicks, no oil pan or headers dragging the ground, maybe a BobsProFab front end with custom headers and oil pan for ground clearance.
Slicks, spooled rear ends, no back seat, loud and obnoxious, headers dragging, it's all fine when you're racing alot, but it gets annoying just watching it sit under a car cover all the time. Although I might run it this weekend finally!
What can you guys add to this? I started a pro touring thread awhile back and loved some of the ideas, a new style Hemi with a supercharger would be cool.
Personally, I think you need to trade yours for a Turbine Bronze, high 10 low 11 sec, 68 Dart street machine. No roll bar in the way. Runs fine on pump swill at the track all day long, and still holds it's own at car shows, if you choose.
But that's just my opinion
