Anyone know if having optic neuritis in the past will stop a person from passing the physical for a competition license?

Thanks

if you vision is corrected i don't see why it would matter. if your legally blind though, you shouldn't be racing, obviously.

I had it in my left eye, and was completely blind in that eye for about one week, 3 1/2 years ago. Took massive doses of IV steroids for a week and over the next 6+ months, I regained 75 to 90% of my vision back in which glasses do not fix. Varies day to day. I have very mild discomfort in that eye most of the time. The possibility of future episodes are always there, and what that means if it does happen again.

I just don't want to get this car built, and then be told I shouldn't or can't race. It's been over twenty years since I've raced, and boy do I have the hunger to get back into it!

According to my last MRI no, I do not have MS. That was two years ago.

I guess what I'm concerned about is NHRA's medical consultant rejecting it because of what kind of eye trouble it is. I should easily pass the eye chart, not 20/20 left eye, but good enough. I went through the entire chain of eye doctors back then, and it took one of the top neuro-ophthalmologists to give me any real answers about what was happening. According to statistics, I have a 50 - 50 chance of developing MS in the next 12 years.

Do you think I'm worrying too much about this, or should I see if I can ask one of NHRA's consultants?

all they check is if you passed the eye test. I don't think there's a box to check for a previous problem left untreated
i just checked there is a box but allows explanation. if cured or not having issues you will pass
from Mayo clinic

Most people who experience a single episode of optic neuritis eventually recover their vision. Treatment with steroid medications may speed up vision recovery.

Thanks! The steroid only helps the inflammation of the optic nerve when it first happens. I did that. What it means is that you typically don't stay blind, but once optic nerve cells are dead, there's no fixing them. There are about 1.1 million in each eye. Vision improves for about 6 months and that's probably as good as it will get.
