Hi,
Thinking of buying a truck where the rebuilt (by owner) tranny runs great through 1st and 2nd but just wont pick up 3rd.
Is there some simple assembly error possible with a fluid passage left uncovered or blocked that could cause this ?
Is this a sign that the trans is shot? ( the oil looks plentiful and clean)

Any comment appreciated.

Nick.
( Thanks Moparts for the post and the cool shirt from Carlisle!!!)

IIRC I think the governor in the tailshaft can cause such issue. COuld be stuck or may have been left out.

Could be something as simple as the kickdown being adjusted to tight, back it of a bit and see what happen's....though if ya fix it before ya buy it he might want more $$$

No 3rd gear right after an overhaul is often the result of the builder leaving the 11/32" check ball out of the valve body.

Is Reverse OK?

Just had the same issue. Trans worked fine for a day, but now seems to slip in third. Fluid looks fine. What else could go wrong. When the trans failed before the rebuild, the front clutches were burned up (assumed the front drum seal went bad). That was replaced. The valve body is a turbo action cheetah. Any ideas?

A long time ago a friend and myself put a shift kit in a 727 and the instructions said to remove the check balls from the valve body, then it said which ones to leave out and which ones to put back in...except for one,so we picked leave it out.We put it all back together and took it for a test drive and it didn't have 3rd gear.So we took it back apart and installed the check ball that we had left out,and it worked fine. The worst part was by the time we had finished it was dark,24 degrees, windy, and snowing, and we did it outside.
