I need to paint my grilles for my 71 super bee. I have standard plastic grilles and the R/T louvered tailights. I would like to know the colors of the grilles (all shades) and the color of the factory black tailight bezels.... Thanks, Steve

The louvered taillights were only equipped on super bees that had the rubber painted bumper option and they were painted a satin black. They were standard on 500 and R/T and had a 3 stage finish which consisted or argent on the main housing, silver on the beveled edges, and black surrounds around the lenses. Here's a collage from Nacho showing all of the different 3rd gen charger taillights and their finishes. http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/4271/3rdgentailcompose2.jpg

Here are some of my former survivor '71 Charger R/T (Whitey as many of you know her as). Basically light silver outside border, dark argent silver (or to that effect) and the recess portion going into the lens a semi-gloss black... There are three colors involved..

Are the R/T tail light bezels the same argent as the 1971 center caps?

The taillight bezels should not be all black until 1972. I had a '71 Bee with rubber bumpers and they were tri-tone.
Here is an untouched original '71 Charger R/T with colored bumpers and the correct taillight bezel finish.
The color of these bezels has been in question for some time now. I used to be in the "black on body colored bumpers" camp until recently. There is nothing to indicate there were two different color bezels in any of the dealership data, factory photos or parts books I've seen. A friend also sent me this pic from a show he was at earlier this year of a survivor R/T with the tri-color bezels...
I see a whole lot of masking in my future
Well, I'm masking... My plan is to mask all the areas that are already black; spray the light argent perimiter, then mask it; finally, spray the dark argent.
Question to anbody who has done this: How did you mask the small slits? Masking tape wont stick to that area because of the roughness of the casting. Masking the other areas went well...

I'm about to do this as well, I have one bezel black and one argent. I still have to experiment as to which colours are the closest to the light/dark argent.
1972Rallye, post some pics when you can.
Good call, I should take some pics...

I recall I airbrushed the black slits from the back side. I think I airbrushed all the black as a matter of fact Only thing I masked was the light/dark argent
Do you recall what color you used for the dark argent? Was it textured?

Here' a brief photo essay to date: Existing, all black masked off to paint perimeter light argent. I used Totally Auto grille paint for this because I had some left over from the front grille repaint several years ago: Inserts masked, Light Argent painted: Perimeter masked, ready for Textured Argent: Textured Argent applied: Unmasked and looking NICE!: For the Textured Argent, I used Krylon Graphite Textured Shimmer #2521. I found good color info in this thread: https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=5371493&page=0&vc=1Hopefully this helps somebody. I'll post installed pics once I get the bumper re-assembled (I had it repainted after an incident with my truck and the garage door).

Bob,, that was great.. Very good color and detail. Having restored a set or two in my day, I really have an appreciation for that work you did.
