I backed down my driveway to go for a cruise tonignt and when I stopped to put it in drive it died. The engine cranks and I have fuel so I suspect it's the ignition system. Where would you recommned I start looking. It's a 66 Coronet with a 440/727 combo. Mopar electronic igntion, orange box, ballast resistor. Appreciate any help. The car has been running fine til tonight. Thanks

take off the yellow wire off of the starter relay to (temporarily) disable the starter. Take the wire(s) off of the coil negative primary terminal. take coil secondary wire out of the dist & hold it 1/4" from a safe ground. Have a helper turn key to start and hold it while you ground the coil negative primary terminal (not the wire you removed from the terminal) to ground repeatedly like Morse Code with a jumper wire w an alligator clip on each end and see if this makes the secondary wire spark. If so the coil/ballast/ign2 & attending wiring is good (they can and do act up when hot but you are dead in the water) and this only leaves the orange box (or it lost it's ground, an easy check) or the dist pickup. Pickups are pretty reliable but check the gap and if you have a spare dist in your stash handy plug it in and spin it by hand to check that (or the one in the eng now w a VOM on milli amps as you crank the eng to see if the pickup is generating a signal)

"Run" wire through the bulkhead connector. Had the terminal go bad and it killed the ignition. If you hot wire the car and it runs that is likely the culprit (had to do that on a cruise night to get it home ). Also had the factory tach short out the ignition once. Removed the tach wire from the coil and it ran perfect.

Either way, you should have a spare ballast resisitor and orange box in your tool box to swap out on the road, as suggested above.
