The local auto parts store has the correct size u-bolts I need to put the rear axle housing into my car, but they look cheap. (The package says "Made In China" anyway) It's labeled on the package that these u-bolts are grade 5 & they are a lighter silver in color. I remember putting in the darker ones last time I swapped springs & I believe they were grade 8.

Anyone know if the 5 is adequate, or should I hunt down the 8's?

Thanks, Bob

(1) inadequate (2) absolutely. A truck suspension shop can make them for you but I prefer the OE Mopar ones w the chamfer on the inside of the bend.

Thanks guys.

My gut feeling when I saw the 5's said don't, but the fact they were right there in my hand made it very tempting to hurry the project along.

There is a spring shop in town that I will stop at tomorrow at lunch time, hopefully they'll have them in stock.

..grade 8 is harder/stonger because of a higher carbon content...when it fails it may snap because being harder it will be more brittle.
grade 5 is not as strong but will probably bend and stay in tact unless really stretched.
grade 5 is fine for auto suspension components but it has to be sized correctly.
i.e a 1/4 grade 5 bolt might not be strong enough for a certain component so a 3/8 would be used.

I vote Mancini too.

I ordered a set from them (along with new springs) and they were at my door within a couple of days...

Stronger is not always better, sometimes more ductility is required.

I would, however, avoid Chinese fasteners on a critical application like this.

Guess where the bulk if not all of the Dorman stuff is being made these days ?

Not to say that the MP stuff or the stock a local truck spring shop isn't coming from there also .

I ordered a set from Mancini a few years ago. I asked if they were flattened and knurled like OEM, their resonse was yes. What I got was typical round U-bolts.

The ones I got two weeks ago were flattened at the top (I don't remember if they were knurled, but it's too late to check now -- they are already installed on my Barracuda)...

Maybe they had a different supplier or stocked a different style a few years ago.

It's inevitiable John,....your just going to have to bite the "Chinese bullet" ,....made in the USA has been a joke for close to several decades now,......maybe I'll tell you someday, the story when I worked for a major manufacturer, about 30 yrs ago that, when orders couldn't be processed enough,......the tailers stocked with "back up" items from China, India, Taiwian, etc were used, and packaged in their boxes, which read, "Made with Pride in the USA",...even when you purchase an item "made in the USA",.......were do you think the raw, or base componets come from?,......being in the manufacturering sector for about thirty years now, working for manufactures making everything from automotive componets (Chrysler and Ford were our biggest customers) to computer hardware, to home appliances, electronics, you name it, even componets for the space program,.....you'd be amazed the amount of foreign componets, sub assemblies, base materials, etc that are in EVERYTHING you buy, regardless of the "made in USA" claim to fame,....go overseas and you'll see that we flood their market with crap "made in the USA',....it's just a viscous circle,...and being made in the USA solely, is no guarrantee of quality either

You pick up those AMD/Chinese 69 Bee qtrs yet?

Mike
