Thanks in advance, have searched and can't find a good pick. The lower bushing or bearing on my 68 Charger is different and can't see any clear shots of this. It is a 70 Challenger 440 console auto R/T SE with A/C. Cheers, Steve

takes this bearing/support
Thanks Bill, I have this bearing or support bushing and it goes into the bottom of the column as you say. I guess I meant the bottom of the shift tube / ignition lock tube..........

HEMIBULLITT I would check the alignment of that column/coupler/steering box. It is way off. Your main shaft should not rub inside the lock out tube. If that is not your car pictured , that owner should check things out. Jules
This is the problem Jules, the tube at the end should have a guide bushing to center it?? I picked this Challenger up for a friend who got the big shaft at a local body shop. He now has to reassemble the car with unmarked pieces and many of the rare parts are MIA.........I need a pic of how this goes together.

"Also, to adjust the center shaft inside the tube. you have to have the lower coupler all the way on the steering box shaft, then loosly attach the column inside to the bottom of the dash frame, then move the plate around where it attaches to the firewall to center the main shaft inside the lockuout tube to prevent it from rubbing." Exactly. Follow Bill's explanation to set the proper angle. To install the nylon bearing you will have to take the whole column apart. No way around it. The bearing goes around the lock out tube. In order to get that tube out you need to remove the allen nut through the access hole on the side of the lower collar. Next you will need to remove the crush can, the turn signal switch housing and then remove it. Once that is out you can see the top of the lock out tube in the ignition switch housing. You will need to bend back the folded over tabs in order for the tube to slide out the bottom. You're not done yet. You will have to remove the coupler as well as the lower shaft side pin because the tube will not slide out with the shaft pin in place. Best bet is to dismantle the whole thing and do a proper clean and inspection job on the column. Jules

I have a finished 1970 column on the bench now . I can take a pic of tomorrow afternoon if it'll help.

Hopefully this makes senses, It made better sense in my head before I wrote it out
Thanks Bill, that would be great! I believe what you are saying about the final adjustment makes a lot of sense.

Thanks for the info Jules! So there is no centering bushing at the bottom of the lock out tube? It is held in center position by adjusting the column, am I understanding this correctly?
I knew there was more than one reason I like my 68 Charger.

Jules beat me to it, plus his is prettier than mine
There is a lower support similar as I have shown above that's split to allow installation without a complete column dis-assembly, but as mentioned if it's never been apart - best take it apart and ck everything out if for nothing else peace of mind
