I find myself in need of new tires. Currently have M/T drag radials, 275/60x15, the biggest tire I can currently get under the car. Any thing bigger WILL rub.
I can't say that I know a lot about tires other than usually they are round, hold air, and some are stickier than others.
This is the second pair of M/T's I've had on the car, they seem to work very good, but I have no frame of reference to compare them to other than an ordinary street tire which is really no comparison.
I have heard that drag radials are more sensitive to track prep (lack there of) than a regular slick (again, no frame of reference); would a slick give more consistent launches? I've had a best of 1.4550 60ft (local 1/8th mile track) and seem to be holding in the 1.48-9 zone at the local 1/8th mile track, back on Father's day went to the local 1/4 mile track and had a best of 1.5312 (second time trial, different lane than first, had 1.6740 then)and then they plunged to 1.7991 (same lane as 1.53)and the right lane went to 1.8561, I felt like I was on ice, just no bite. All cases same launch procedure, 16 psi in the tires.
I'd like a tire that gives consistent performance round after round (if I can get that far) cuz I'm not smart enough, nor talented enough to adjust myself and be consistent! When I drive the car, I stand on it as hard as I can, cuz that's all I KNOW. Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

The drag radials seem to be great on street cars. We run them on a '70 charger with the 472 Hemi, and they work well enough to have broken three rear ends and one drive shaft. I don't think they will last as long as slicks will. I see a lot of guys buying new ones pretty quick in the higher hp cars. We have not worn ours out yet, but we don't have a lot of runs on them either.
I will say if your going to do a fair amount of drag strip passes, slicks work, and they will last a lot longer.
I have a set of 11.5x 29.5's that fit the same car as our 50 series drag radials. You seem to be local, Oswego correct...LMK. Slicks can be very consistent, but there is a bunch you have to do round to round to be consistent.
Having a good cooling system and launching at the same temp and rpm every round is a big one.

Despite why tire company's and people claim, a drag slick is the best tire for traction. For a car that is strictly a race car, doenst need to fit into a class rule for tires, I dont see why anyone wold choose a DOT approved tire, or some drag radial
