I have a lot of huge decent cabinets in my shop that are made of wood and painted in some sort of red wood paint. They are ok, but I have always wanted some metal cabinets or nicer cabinets as this are is now more of a display area and not the work area any longer. So yesterday I shot one of the doors with epoxy primer and am preparing to shoot a door in Viper red and then clear it. I have not been out yet today to check it but I am wondering if it will pull/lift down the road. The paint I am using is automotive paint, and a good brand but is left over and will eventually go to waste if not used.

Just curious on what ya think?

Dave

I've never tried it personally, but a friend of mine who owns a body shop did his like that and as far as I know they're still there and its been about 4-5 years. I don't see why it wouldn't as long as the primer is good to go.

I'd say you'd have better luck using automotive paint on wood than using wood paint on a car !!

They're cabinets for cryin' out loud ... how much wear and tear are they gonna see !?!?!?

I just went out and shot them with maybe 8 year old PPG DCC. I know I could massage them and make them look nicer and use a fill primer, but I dont want to spend forever doing cabinets and more $$$. I just want to use some cheap epoxy primer, (SHOPLINE) and use up this paint before it dries and its gone. I think it will look good and a zero cost alternative to nice new cabinets made out of metal.

Dave I will post pics of the one door later.

If the primer does not lift, it should be alright. Keep the number of coats down or it will start cracking in about a year or so.

Just one coat of expoxy primer, (SHOPLINE) seems to stick to anything. I have used it a lot. And a couple of coats of left over Viper red PPG/ DCC single stage.

I have the rest of the cabinet doors inside the booth in primer. I will shoot them all in the morning. I want to give it extra time to flash as I did on the tester.

JD, I have 5 more than that. At times, I use a lot at the same time for those MOPAR parts.

Is it hot over there too? Try to shoot as cool as possible and reduce it and wait between coats...even if it doesn't say to add reducer or thinner. Cool color, just needs some stickers vs sanding and polishing.. IMO
