A friend of mine wants to put in a 12 volt battery for easier starts but does not want to change out the lights or the generator. Anyone put in some kind of converter or reducer that will work?

We did one at work years ago.It was a 12/6 volt battery.Started on 12 but all the electrics ran thru the 6 volt part.Another guy ran a 9 volt battery with all his 6 volts stuff.I believe it was a tractor type battery.Rocky

If there is room for two 6V batteries, hook them in series for 12V to run the starter and be charged by the 12V alternator then run the 6V items off of one battery only.

If there is room for only a single 12V battery, find a "tar top" type and tap into the connector bar for the first three cells to power the 6V items.

optima makes a red top 6v that you could do both of these ideas john suggested, and 2 of those would fit in a standard 12v battery tray. they may need a tiny bit of tray adjustment because you would have double the case thickness in the middle[both batterys side by side]which may, or may not, case a problem.

Haven't noticed any tar tops lately but maybe tractor supply might have some thing, no room for two battery's, my thought was hook up a twelve volt in the trunk for just starting, and run the six volt for the rest , charge only when needed. I'll look into the tar top battery that might work. Thanks for the tips

Take a look at the 6V Optima that moparx suggested, looks like two of them would easily fit in a standard battery tray.

that was what i was thinking[both batteries in the existing tray]. that setup was used to spin a blown 392 in my buddy's 26 T coupe[wired in series]and it does with no problems his setup was used because he didn't have enough room for a "normal" size battery, but there was just enough room to use 2 of those redtop 6v ones behind the seat.

Now I'm getting confused, if we need to have 6 volts for the lights and assessorries, and 12 volts to start, won't hooking the two 6 volt batteries together make it 12 volts , or just a 6 with more amps? I know my electric lift with 8 - 6 volt batteries is 48 volt system now I'm wondering about the tar top suggestion .

If you put two 6V batteries in the battery tray and hook then up in series you will get 12V for starting and charging but if you hook your 6V devices to the (+) terminal of second battery in the series you will have 6V to run them; both the 6V and 12V systems will share the same ground.

Tar tops are still available from restoration suppliers like Antique Battery but they aren't cheap; of course neither are two Optimas.
