I'm hoping to fit a <sleeper>hemi</sleeper> under the rallye hood on a 71 Barracuda. I have two complications at the moment.
#1 - Schuamacher conversion mounts which raise the engine by 3/8 inch.
#2 - The engine has a Stage V intake which is approx 1/2 inch taller than stock.

I have a 'height map' of the underhood clearance I made with the 440+6 air filter assy and some clay spikes. I 'll have to dig it up.

What I'm considering is adding 1/4 inch spacers between the K-frame and the frame to lower the K-frame. Anyone done this? Anyone think of reasons not to do it?

Thanks

I have heard people talk about it on here. I would not see a real problem with it, there should be plenty of alignment adjustment to work with, drive line angle would be another consideration, along with shroud and radiator alignment/tranny lines if an auto.

Careful, your character's showing!

If you have headers would the torsion bar clearance be an issue?

It's been done many times...Actually if you use the FMJ disc brake spindles and 5/8th spacers front end geometry is unchanged..BTW torsion bars move with the K member...

The only reason I can think of not to do it is that it will change (slightly) the angles/distance between the upper and lower control arms. I doubt it will be a big deal since folks are always swapping out spindles for taller units. Maybe you should do that as well to make things right?

Wow! Lots of good info in all these replys. I'm going to look at header clearance now. I think I have a set of FMJ spindles I picked up for the Challenger that I might retask. I'd love to hear from someone with 1st person experience also, just for info on handling & feel.

Anyone have a Stage V 2x4 baseplate they can grab a measurement from?

Thanks!

The front pivot for the torsion bars will move, the rears won't.

Will it be an issue? I dunno.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

I have TTI 2 1/8 headers. Obviously they'll move with the engine, down 1/4 - 3/8 inch looks like it should not interfere as it'll basically put the engine where it would be from the factory, and the torsion bars should still be clear.

all that just for Schuamacher conversion mounts? me thinks its easier
to get out the plasma cutter and/or sawzall and mig and just do it yourself.
then you can put the engine wherever one wants.

that's what I was wondering. Does anyone know about how much I could drop it before the tbar would be binding?

Nahhh. It the mounts AND the Stage V AND the Rallye hood. If I have to, I'll get a solid mount from John Arruzza, or spend more hard-earned money on a Hemi K-frame and mounts. Or I could get really spendy and look at an AlterKation K frame But that seems a bit more costly than 4 1/4 inch thick square washers and an hour of my time.

But you... sound like a guy that like to have fun with the PC and mig. So what suggestions do you have that I can do with tin snips and a soldering iron? I'm short a mig and PC currently.

i run 1/8" spacers. Took some flat stock and cut a slot in the side. ( instead of drilling a hole}. This way I could just loosen the bolts, let the k frame drop down and slide them in from the side. Kinda like a fender shim.

VanishPt, Amazing! Thats exactly what I was thinking this morning. You still have the white Challenger? Theres a couple of picts of my white 70 Chall. in the link for my sig. You have to go up a level tho.

Yes I still have it. (I could not find your pics)

If you go a 1/4" or more, you may have to adjust your steering column angle. Just loosen the 3 bolts that hold it to the firewall and slide it around so that it is the angle that you like.

Update! I got some EXCELLENT info on this at Carlisle. I stopped by U.S. Car Tool and mentioned my plans to John.
He pointed out some specifics to keep in mind.
  • There is a recess in the frame on B&E bodies where the k-frame bolts go thru.
  • Ma Mopar used special hardened Grade 10 bolts to hold the K-frames in place on B&E bodies.
  • They have a "shoulder" which fits in the recess of the frame.

I still plan to do it, since I won't be racing anyway with a vert.
