I have a 18 spline 4 speed that I bought last year and am getting ready to install behind a 500hp or so 505 inch stroker, intended for mainly street use. I just found out that it has been "pro-shift" modifed and I need help deciding what to do about it. The internals do look to be fresh and I don't think that it has been run since the modification.

So I have been talking to the guys at Brewer's and Liberty and my options appear to be:

1 - Try it as is, several people I have talked to (not Brewer's or Liberty) say that it just takes a little more clutching to make these work.

2 - Change it back to stock, Liberty said it would be about $600 in parts.

3 - Sell it and find another trans (if I sell it, what is something like this worth??).

John

For a street car I wouldn't install it (as is). From what I've read, the process of "pro-shifting" a tranny equates to removal of synchronizers. I've never operated a pro-shifted tranny, so I can only assume that you'd be unhappy with it on the street. That said, I think all you can do is weigh the price of a rebuilt unit (minus what you can sell yours for) versus the cost of parts to rebuild yours. I'd also call Passon Performance and see what kind of advice they have.

I've driven my Liberty pro-shifted dart for 30plus
years on the street. Some issues- but mostly, DON'T PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AT A STOP LIGHT!Very hard to get back in gear from neutral with engine running because no synchro's.Other than that with the improvement of face plating-no real issues.Pull shifter firmly between gears and have fun! Chris

Are you planning doing it your self? If you are then you might want to just get the mainshaft gears and reuse the cluster. The face-plate mods from Liberty would be an alternative and will shift better and last longer on the street.I have put many miles on the street and strip with Pro-shift HEMI boxes and it's an easy thing to get the hang of but city driving can be a pain sometimes.I had my Richmond 5-speed converted to face-plate and I really like it very much for the track and it's much easier to shift than a Pro-shift unit. You might want to contact Jamie Passon at Passon Performance as he may be able to work out some sort of trade for your tranny for something more useful to you

I guess it would be like my "pro-shifted" '47 Power Wagon. Straight cut gears and no syncros. It is kinda fun and it gets you there... but syncros are an improvement for the street.

I had a Doug Nash slick shifted Muncie in a brand X. You could drive it OK on the street, don't leave it in neutral at a stop, but it was knd of a pain in the rear, a lot of crunching, partilularly on downshifts. I replace it with a freshened up unit that shifts fine. If anybody need a Doug Nash M-20 Muncie with only a couple of hundred miles on it let me know....
