How do you remove and install the reverse servo on a 904.
I am installing a reverse manual vb and was told to install a billet servo. I need to now how to do this and can it be done while the tranny is in the car?

yes,I just did this on my 727 I put a manual VB in

did it in the truck

i used a small bottle jack on a block to get it up there

then a large socket the size of the spring cup
jacked it up till it compressed...which is just a little bit

removed the retaining clip and lowerd the jack

removed the cup/spring servo

installed the billet servo/spring/cup,compressed it back up into the hole so I could install the clip in the groove removed jack

I removed the adjuster and the strut bar to swing the lever down out of the way..which I should have placed this as first step just now

took a few trys to get the strut bar back in place but once I got used to looking up at it from the bottom up

i got it sliped back in

that seemd the hardest part for me,but once I figured how to do it i removed it a few times and put it right back every time

not that hard at all

I had thought the servo was gonna compress up further than it did also

but it only moves a 1/8" at most

good luck and might as well adjust the bands up while your at it

good luck

Not all 904's have the removable strut on the band lever, V8 versions with a double-wrap band must have the tailhousing removed to access the servo piston. Band adjustments are different too.

What year are we dealing with?

It is in a 72 dart, but this is not the original tranny, so I can't tell you what year it is. Is there a way to tell the year?

I was told that when using the reverse manual vb that with the higher line pressures that it could crack the stock servo piston. Is that correct and how do you tell if that has happened?

Look at the rear band, it will be either a single wrap (single visible band) or a double wrap (three visible bands). The double wrap servo can't be removed without removing the tailhousing to access the lever pivot pin.

One reason to replace the stock piston with billet is to avoid cracking but if the VB has low band apply (LBA) it is important to replace the piston and install a heavier release spring. If your VB isn't LBA you can take a chance with the stock servo.
