The 383 in my RR is all new but it has a rattle in the top on the back of the passenger side. The motor was built and set for a long time before it was ever ran, would it have done something to the lifters? It goes away after the motor warms up. It has no miss in it and it doesn't sound bad just enough you know it's there. I haven't changed the breakin oil yet, would that maybe have something to do with it? It has been ran about 2 hours and you couldn't hear it untill I got the ehzaust on it. Any info. will help alot. Thanks Ronnie

May be a little piston slap, if it goes away when warmed up. Not uncommon on fresh builds with certain piston mfgs. or fitment. It can almost have a diesel type sound, but quieter.

I have an exhaust leak at the head/manifold that sounds like a ticking but goes away after it warms up. Just a thought.

I don't think it's an ehzaust leak but I will check that. I'm just wondering if some of the lifters might have stuck while it was setting. Thanks Ronnie

What cam are you running? I have a slight tick if you will, and after some reading I have found that the newer grinds tend to fall off so quick it allows the valves to close with a clicking sound. I run a comp hydraulic flat tappet cam in my small block, and I can hear it slightly when sitting in the car kinda through the headers. I noticed it more after I installed my exhaust.

Mine is all new as well, fresh build. Tick, tick, tick. It's not real loud but you can hear it for sure. I don't recall if that particular cam was mentioned in the article I read, but it did mention several cam manufactures. I'm not saying that is what it is, but might be possible. I wish I could find that article again, I would post it.

That is what I'm thinking are at least one are two may be stuck. I'm just wondering if it is maybe the flapper in the exz. manifold. I don't think it would be the cam doing the valve slap since it is just in one area of the motor. I know one of the springs on the flapper is gone and it seems to go away after it warms up. Ronnie

You are running a 484 cam w/ mani's? anyway I guess you could wire the heat riser flap open and see if that helps. Yale a long screw driver and hold one end to your ear and go acros the valve cover. If you have a bad lifter you will here it. Or you could just pull that vavle cover and check lifter pre-load on each push rod before you fire it. Again if you have a ton of slack on the rocker arm something isn't right.
