A friend of mine has a 39 dodge with a 383 & 727 pushbutton trans in it. We got the car running again this afternoon after installing a 4 link rear suspension,The trans has a leak(have'nt found it yet) and was down on fluid after setting. There was a very loud clanking/knocking sound which sounded like it was coming from the dampner pulley, Once I added some tranny fluid the noise stopped. What would cause this? Thanks,D

Have you checked the end play on the crankshaft?

John,I did think of that, but the engine only has a few hundred miles on it.Seems strange it would stop when the tranny has fluid in it, but then again I've seen cranks(chevys) move forward and aft by depressing a stiff clutch with a bad thrust. Could you enlighten me a little more as to what is going on with the 727 that would make the sound(s) I described( ie converter moving in and out of the pump housing ect.) Thanks, D.

Loose bolts crossed my mind also,I'll check them first and see what happens,D.

It's just a wag, but theoretically the full converter would tend to push the crank forward and change any noise created by the converter moving.

It's worth checking the crank end play and the converter bolts.
