Trying to figure out if my 833's leak can be fixed from the outside or the inside of the case... the shaft for the reverse gear is leaking. Is there a seal on the inside or outside of the case?

Thank Moparts!

It's an O-ring on the shift shaft , you have to COMPLETELY DISASSEMBLE the trans.

That said is it an Alum case trans or cast iron ? Some (??) of the late alum OD trans had a seal that could be gotten from the outside , everything else was a disassemble deal to repair .

Ah crap that's what I was thinking since there isn't anything that looks like a seal on the outside. It's leaking from the bearing retainer a little too so it's coming out.

It's not the aluminum case.

Contact Passon or Brewer and get a rebuild kit and go thru it , change the o rings on the side cover also .

just an FYI clean the ends of the shift shafts very good , wire brush , file down any burrs and clean with brake clean and blow off before you pull them out , that way you don't gouge the tunnels they go thru and create a permanent leak point.

If your leaking from the bearing retainer, check for cracks at the bolt holes. Real common when the bolts get over tightened or the retainer was used without the correct gasket and silicone.

Good advice fellahs, thanks. I have bought all my trans stuff from Brewers and plan to continue with the kit.

Are there any good step by step A833 overhaul books / manuals out there? Special tools?

Start with the factory service manual.

Yeah, my factory 1964 manual really seems to have glossed over some stuff. I've found some articles online that seem to fill in the blanks pretty well.

When it rains it pours...I just bought a 1970 Hemi Cuda convertible replica at Mecum Indy and 200 miles into my first Mopar experience I too have a tranny leak or two. The primary source seems to be coming from the shaft for the first/second shift rod. Can the o-ring seal on that shaft be replaced simply by removing the inspection plate or is a more extensive tear down required?
I may have a secondary leak coming from the speedometer cable where it is crimped in the metal ferrule it runs through at the point where it attached to the speedometer pinion. It is hard to tell if this is a secondary leak or if the fluid from the 1st/2nd shaft leak is blowing onto the speedo cable and then running back along the cable. Is it common to have leaks occur around this crimped ferrule?

Thanks,

Bob

Yes, just pull the side cover to replace the O rings. Also there is a seal inside the speedo pinion adapter on the cable side that may need to be replaced or is missing, there shouldn't be trans fluid getting into the cable .
