Just finished installing my new Star vacuum pump.

Had to move the fuel pump and get some unique sized belts, but it looks good to me, and I am now ready to start the motor tommorow night and hear what 900 ponies sound like.

How does this install look???

Cheers,

Arnie

Did you buy it used ? It is missing a very critical part the seperator tank.
I have the mountain motor version. this is the first installation that I have seen that does not use their tank.I felt one of if not the main advantage of the Star units was in it being non lubricated and also using that tank . Why would you want to pull thru the pump when Star puts an emphasis on keeping the pump dry and oil free? The way it's now routed oil and dirt will wind up inside it for sure and do it harm.
When then tank is used everything in drawn thru the tank's filters before getting to the pump itself. This will keep pump life at a very high level .Other designs need much more attention and frequent rebuilds due to dirt going thru their vanes. Star will not warranty the pump unless the tank is used. You should seriously consider getting one before you hurt the pump.

Mine has the seperator and I have never seen a Star installed without it.

I bought it new as a kit, (not direct from Star)and it came with the Moroso Puke tank...

The guy from Star simply said to spray a little brake clean in the pump now and then to keep it clean...

I will check with the company i bought the kit from.

Thanks for the heads up!

Arnie

Not what I was told at all. Fred hit the nail on the head. I believe their big selling point is the complete "system". The Moroso tank won't do the same thing as the Star seperator.

Moroso pumps are designed to have a little oil go through them for lubrication....A Star is NOT. The seperator is VERY important, don't run it without it.

From what i heard the star needs that canister. Buying everything for a star pump was just out of my price range so i went with a GZ pump which from what they say is made to allow some of the oil go through.

I am running an Aluminum block 540ci on Alcohol using a Terminator mechanical injection system.

James Monroe from Killer Ron's does not recommend using the seperator w/ Mechanical Alcohol injection as the larger amount of water/oil discharge (compared to a Gas motor) quickly plugs the separator resulting in inconsistent vacuum levels. This recommendation only applies to Ron's injection apllications.

He has been using and selling Star pumps this way since 2004 with no problems what so ever...

I appreciate everyones help and advice, but in this case I am going to run it like James recommends without the separator. James gives great customer service and will stand behind what he sells.

I will let you all know how it goes.

Cheers,

Arnie

Fred, you don't have much confidence in those Star Vacuum Pumps do you?

I ordered mine directly from Star and they did not ever mention the separator or the 1 year warantee. Somehow I think my Pump will last a year on this car. So I think it will be a PUSH.

I do not plan on running their separator and I think I will be ok with the setup I will have.

Good luck, Ron.

Same here, I bought all of my parts directly from Star and they never once mentioned the canister to me either. I dont plan on buying one at this time. No problems with mine as it is.

Is there a good baffle system in the valve cover? I ran a similar setup, and that very same POS Moroso puke tank was horrible. it did very little to seperate the blow by and oil.
be perpaired to do a bunch of cleaning in between rounds with some brake clean and a bunch of rags.
It puked oil every pass, and blowed oil and milky stuff all over the place.
Thing was the POS tank would only have a 3-4 oz in it but would still blow crap every were...
Switched to a Steff;s tank and it was night and day diff...

Good luck.

Ditto on the moroso tank. 2 oz of oil per run and I think most of it was on the radiator core support where the tank was. I got a better tank from Mike @ Muscle Motor's, night and day the difference.

I also ordered mine direct from star... Very happy with the customer service . They told me at the time of purchase that in order to have the warranty that I HAD to purchase the tank also. I did and am very happy with the purchase.
