A couple of weeks ago I developed a leak between the inttake and exhaust manifolds, Pulled them apart and saw 1/2 of the tin gasket was missing. Went an got an new gasket and installed top side up, then bolted all back. Fired her up and leak still there!! Ok pulled her all apart again made sure top was up and this time bolted the two manifold togeather first then boleted to head, fired her up and still a leak What am I missing? where did I go wrong?

Thanks for the help.

Diego

Have you checked both gasket mating surfaces for flatness? The blown out section of the original gasket might have caused one (or both) of the mating surfaces to "erode".

You might have to get some hi-temp composite gasket material and make your own.

I did look at the surface they looked ok, nothing out of the ordenary? The leak is under the carb, not at the head.

you have to make sure the two manifolds mate up properly at the gasket surface. They my actually need to be machined. The two manifolds should be bolted together a little loose then bolt the set up to the head. snug up the manifold bolts and check for any miss alignment. If it's tight torque em down then torque it all to the head.

Check out Remflex gaskets. They work great between the manifolds and where they bolt to the head.

IIRC, the Slant 6 is prone to cracking the exhaust manifold; had that problem 20-25 years ago on one.

After a little research I guess this is a common problem with the crappy tin gasket. There is a company in Oz that makes a good replacment gasket, I have two on the way!!

And that is because people over torque them to the engine. I believe they should be torqued to 10 ft lbs at the block.

Not necessarily. I had one in a Fury that cracked with over 100K on it. My Dad bought the car new and the manifold had never been off.

cracked slant 6 exhaust manifolds are apparently fairly common. Mine cracked on my 1987 Dodge truck I have owned since new. My mechanic found an aftermarket new replacement manifold.
