My Charger's wiring is a rats nest of botched radio installations and malfunctioning gauges. I really don't trust any of it and want to replace it and get "everything" working. I want all my gauges to work, but don't need HVAC or Radio.

What's the best place to start? Are there really good new wiring harnesses available? I know I'll need to pull the windshield and pull the dash, but I really want the car from an operational standpoint to be top-notch and safe.

TIA
Nick

Your only choices are a painless harness or the VERY EXPENSIVE Harness for year one for NEW .

I normally take out the entire wiring harness and get out the service manual with the electrical diagram. Take out my ohm meter and start checking all the wires for contintuity. Replace or rewire as needed, fix ends with spares I have on hand. Never bought a harness in my life. I tag the wires for what goes to what for easy install. Good rainy day or winter project here in Michigan.

If you are not electrically inclined, get the year one as it will save you hours or even weeks.

The big plus is with the YearOne is, you will use the same style bulkhead connector, with the others you will have to put something to block that hole or splice all the wires into the old connector.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

helping a buddy through this right now - wound up going with an American Autowire Highway 22 kit - He is not worried about being correct, rather having a car that will start up and run - so the decision was made to update ALL of the 40 year old wiring to modern standards, While it's involved, it's the best decision.

He had a problem with a resto type kit that had bad crimps and has been chasing loose connections ever since. That played into the decision as well.

We researched a few kits, EZ, Painless and American, the Autowire kit was the best for his needs and while not he cheapest, comes with most of the connections where the other kits leave you supplying the terminating ends and other small parts.

I took my engine bay harnesses out, bought all new high temp wire, I went one gauge higher in size and made all my own harnesses including the headlight relay modification. I bought all wire and connectors from DelCity.net

If you have the time and skills, it is a very fun project.

I bought a couple harnesses from trucks and cars whatever I could find and repaired the harnesses in my Challenger. You will be amazed how easy it is if you take it one wire at a time don't look at all the wires in the rats nest it will be overwhelming. Just look at one wire replace it or repair it then move to the next wire. FYI I do my repairs with solder and shrink

not sure about your car, but for my cuda i bought the year one kit. it really is "plug and play". connectors all fit, wire colors were easy to match, and it was quite painless. More money spent, less time working on it and more time spent burning the tires off...

Start by taking all of the NON original wiring out, and see what you have. You may be surprised, I have been able to get all of my cars electrical systems up and running, after you get all of the "creative" wiring out of the way-

Thanks for all the help guys, I'll probably be taking a close look at the Painless and Year One kits. Anyone know if Painless sets up at Carlisle?

everyone i have talked to that installed a painless kit says it ain't so painless.

the YO kit will put it back to original but its still a 40 year old design. i would rather update it and eliminate the amp gauge and have the entire system protected by a mega fuse. only one i know that has that is american auto wire highway kits. i hear good things about ron francis kits too. thing i like about the american kits is they have circuit for elect fans, fuel pumps and a few other things built in to it plus mega fuse protection, and the fact that you attach the wires to the fuse box so you can pic the ideal place to mount it and wire to it. unlike some others that your stuck with where the wires will reach because they come attached to the box already. the last thing i would do is patch the old one back together. is it really worth having 40 year old wiring in your car? especially when these days you have other options. its just stupid and a disaster waiting to happen in my opinion.

I did my 1969 charger rt with all new wire harness from year one.depends on options?.But i did the whole car that way and i think thats the only way,But its not cheap, also if you get your rally gauges done i would look into charger specialties and get all new not rebuilt gauges as i had my gauges rebuilt from auto specialties and they did not do a very good job at all,now the gauges from charger specialites work as they should.hope this helps
