OK, just started working on my Challenger for the long weekend.

I started by inspecting the rear wheels because I thought that the rear oil seals had gone bad. I had gear oil coming out the brakes at the car's first autocross.

Rear end is an 8.75 with 741 with 3.23 SG. I changed out the 741 with 3.23 open.

My method was pulling the axles, R&R'ing the pumpkin, and reinstalling the axles. I had no problems until I brought the car out to the AutoX.

So today, I looked at everything and the axles wiggle 1/4" in and out of the housing. I took out the passenger side axle to inspect it, and nothing looks out of place, but obviously, something has moved. The adjuster cannot take out the slack.

Right now I'm postulating that the press fit on the bearings and backup collar wasn't enough for the autox and they've slid down. I could press them down again (I have the press and could do that) but I don't know how far, etc... Also, this problem may (will, probably) return, so it'd be nice to kick it in the butt now.

So the question is, what now do I do? Bring the axles to a shop? Bring the whole car? I'm in a quandry, and I'm pretty lost.

Did you check to see if the thrust spacer was inside the new center section you installed on some carriers the roll pin breaks and the spacer falls out and you might not catch it. unless you look

Do you have a picture of this?

The axles go in to where they should be, but they come out 1/4". They don't go into the drum any extra then they did before...

I agree. Sounds like you are missing the thust buttons in the differential. Without the buttons, the axles fall into the housing, and you cannot adjust wheel bearing lash.

The thust button is illustrated in the center and toward the bottom of the page in this link:

so no matter what diff I have (cone or clutch) I should not be able to see through the housing at all. (axles are removed, again) There is a small hole through the center of the SG. If I have to pull the pumpkin, so be it... ugh...

If you have a small hole you can see light thru the block is most likely missing.

If the Third member was out you could push and pull on the pin with a magnet on a stick and it would move back and forth about a 1/4 to 1/8 (?) of a inch.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

I'd send you mine but mine went ...

I'm sure Doctordiff could sell you one if he has any.

Email him if he does not respond. He is a busy man.

If you go to the dealer and ask for a thrust button you'll most likely get a blank stare. If the guy behind the counter has gray hair then he might know what you're talking about.

DoctorDiff should be able to take care of you.

Yes, # 2881313 is still available from the dealer, but it costs twice as much as the hardened thrust buttons I stock.

Or you could install a new set of "green" axle bearings and no longer need the thrust block and no longer need to adjust the bearings.

Yep you could do that but you would be getting a lesser quality bearing (yes greens are fine but not as good as the tapered) and added expense of the bearing and the pressing on and off. Plus it isn't as if adjusting the endplay was a process that was constantly repeated. but once done it is done. And takes all of about 5 extra minutes.

I wouldn't put greens in a car I planned to AUTOCROSS

Hasn't it been determined that "green" axle bearings don't last as long in cars with heavy side loads?
They work great in a straight line but when you're throwing the car around corners life is better with a stock tapered bearing.
