Hey Everyone

I just picked up a Petty Blue 72 Duster 340, a real H code car and it has drum brakes on the front. I was always under the impression that 340 cars came with disks up front as standard is this true ?

What would it take to swap it over to disk up front, do i need to find an A-body disk brake set up or would something else work like an F-body or M-body set up ?

Thanks
Jay

They had 10 inch drums stock, and IIRC, you'll need upper arms too to swap to later A discs

Disc brakes were standard on 1970 340 Dusters, but became optional in later years

Is thats the ONLY model of all the 68-73 340 cars, A,B, or E Body included, that came standard with disk brakes??

For some reason I think it might be, but not for sure.

So, all 1970 340 A-bodies. Is that the only year?

Strange they did that but choose to make the 3-speed manual transmission standard to keep the advertised price down. And then the next year, went back to drums std and 3spd manual.

Wonder if it was done to soften the blow of not having a high trimed 340 A-body in 1970. The 69 Formula S and GTS were based on high trimmed cars. The 1970 Swinger 340 and Valiant Duster 340 were lower trimmed cars.

The new 1970 E-bodies filled the gap between an A-body and B-body sporty two doors.

The '73 and up a body upper control arms take the bigger ball joint size neccesary to run a '73 up a body disc knuckle. You can also use other body style knuckles but some people feel it could cause bump steer issues. If you do go with the 73 up style discs be ready to switch to 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern wheels. You will also need a new m/c and proportioning valve. I went with an adjustable- the stock setup is known to lock up the back first which you don't want.

You can keep your small bolt pattern and small balljoint upper control arms with a Kelsey Hayes four piston caliper setup. It came stock before 73 but it can be tempermental- the pads tend to wear grooves making them not slide properly on their shafts. Also even though the parts are very similar to a 60s mustang setup they are rare and expensive.

On my '73 dart I went with big bolt pattern stock stuff (had to change ucas) and it works great. I changed the rear axle to match the bolt pattern. On my '72 h code demon I went with 1990 chevy celebrity brakes with a scarebird adaptor to mount the calipers. Kept my 5 on 4" rallys.

Good luck.
