Its a Slant 6 Torqueflite 727. When engaged in Drive,it slips pretty badly, but does propel the vehicle forward, you just gotta wait for it to get going. In reverse it Engages instantly and really hard.

Does this sound like this can be remedied by a fluid/filter change or adjustment,or is it time to swap the tranny?

OK ....

First .. how does the fluid look? .. then check the filter.

look at the adjuster on the outside above the shift levers

see how much threds you have left, the more the better

adjust the bands front/rear and do a fluid change

my 87-a999 started sliping last week, just needed adjusted and shift very good

basic service never hurts one,IMHO

you know short order if its some thing else

Is the throttle pressure linkage still intact and adjusted?

Slipping in forward gears with a strong Reverse points to a problem in the rear clutch.

Since Reverse works OK it's not a system wide fluid flow problem so it's unlikely a simple fluid/filter change will do much good.
