My brake system light is on and i was wondering if its possible to test the brake switch that is located in the proportioning valve? its a stock one for a 68 charger. Does anyone know a source for replacement switches? i havent had any luck finding one locally at the parts places.

Have you checked your emergency brake light switch?

The point being made here is that the light could be on because of the "imbalance" function of the proportioning valve that you are preoccupied with OR from the park brake switch (or in rare cases, a shorted wire on the way to either). Establish which is the source of the light (by unplugging the connector at first one switch, and then the other) before digging into the hydraulics.

If it does turn out to be from the proportioning valve, know that is sometimes possible to get it re-centered by causing a leak (via opening a bleeder and pressing on the brake pedal) from the side opposite the side that was low enough to shift it in the first place.

Down to just a blue car now.

so i just checked again and the light gets brighter when i apply the e brake so its not the e brake switch. I guess i will try bleeding all the brakes this week and see if i get any change. does any one know of a source for the switch in the proportioning valve though?

Drum or disc brakes? Drum brakes do not have a prop valve. If disc and the system is original the prop valve is a separate valve.

Amazing how an unchallenged lie can become the absolute truth.

drums all around. It has some sort of distribution block that has an electrical switch in it.

i had the same problem, turned out to be the master cylinder. after changing it and bleeding the brakes the light went off....you could remove it and put in a tooth pick and test it, it's just a little plunger that triggers the switch. You can remove the switch from the block and test it on the bench....

O.P. is clearly unable or unwilling to unplug wires for some reason.
