Has anyone here done it? Pictures or advice to share? I see that Hurst themselves doesn't offer any rebuild kits for the mechanism itself just the "Pit Pack"...does anyone else? I cannot afford to send my shifter into Hurst for their rebuild service. The shifter in question is the slide-in stick style for a '69 B-Body without console. Thanks for your help.

There's very little that goes wrong on a Hurst shifter. They're built like a tank. If you can carefully disassemble one and note the correct orientation of each plate and spacer then it's just a matter of cleaning the parts and greasing everything upon reassembly. For parts I get Hurst shifters off of overdrive pickups from the 70's and 80's.

Thanks! A friend of mine is willing to give me a decent Competition Plus-style shifter as a donor for my unit if I need parts.

The problem with the shifter is that it's very sloppy. Years ago, before I reinstalled it in the car, I cleaned it out and repacked it with new grease but it has always felt like shifting through mashed potatoes. Are there any adjustments someone can make to tighten things up?

I've added shim washers to the lever pack to tighten them up. That's a trial and error thing. I usually did it on the workbench where I could bolt on the shifter to a transmission and try it out first.
And let me tell ya, if you think a Hurst shifter is sloppy, some of the other brands available back in the day like Mr Gasket, or the factory Inland shifters were even more sloppy feeling than a Hurst.
Compared to today's stick cars, where a lot of them are top loader transmissions or use some sort of metal gate, an old technology Hurst will feel a bit sloppier. A competition plus shifter will feel somewhat tighter than a standard Hurst shifter. You can also bypass the rubber bushings in the handle and make the handle a bolt in deal by drilling it through, which will also tighten it up, but may transmit some rattles back into the cabin.
I'd definitely get the pit pack too and use new bushings and clips throughout.

I definitely like bolting the shifter handle in better. There is one wear area that cause a hangup over nuetral from first to second. The gate selector is a piece that looks similar to an engine valve. It will wear at the reverse detent. There is a one-time fix for this. Turn the selector over so that the old bottom side contacts the reverse detent.
