Why not install a electric one from a Diplomat or Cordoba? Make a terminal provision to your rear package tray (or wherever you want easy access) on it have it act as a bypass switch for when your battery goes dead. (- / +) and then all you have to do is give it a momentary 12 volts and it will disengage the trunk lock and you can charge your battery

You could run the cable through the floor of the trunk and mount the handle sort of up behind the rear bumper maybe if you wanted to be able to get into the trunk without going inside the car
That's where I was originally planning on running it. I'm not ruling it out yet. I'm going to mess with it some tonight, didn't really get a chance to last night

My 72 Imperial has a vacuum-operated trunk release button in the glove box. You could go that route - I'm sure it just needs a vacuum canister.
If his battery goes dead, how does he get into the trunk without starting the engine to make vacuum ?

Plasma cutter? Chain Saw?
Good point. Have a secondary, cable lever that exits near the rear seat (someone mentioned earlier), or even just hidden behind the seat - one that might not be so easy to get to, but there for emergencies?
