A friend of mine has a 78 Dodge camper (20-23 feet long?) with a 318 in it. It has low mileage (around 70K) and is real nice shape. He's doing the timing chain just in case and thought he might throw a little better cam in it along with something like a Performer intake and about a 600 Holley vac sec carb. He's going to be using it to tow his car to the track with. So, what's a good cam for this combo? One of the standard eBay/Summit RV cams? The specs are:

420/443 valve lift
270/280 advertised duration
204/214 duration @.050
112 degree lobe separation

Is there something better? What about the intake? Is the Performer good or something else he could get used relatively cheap? Carb? Exhaust, maybe?

He's just looking for a little more power for towing. Some better mileage would be a plus, too, but not as important.

So, what are your thoughts?

I would use the Performer intake or a old Holley street dominator intake and the 600 Holley carb. And for a cam...the stock OEM 340 replacement works great in a 318.

You are going to have RUFF-time towing with a 318 ...uNless you are doing most of the driving and towing on-the-flat.

With a small cam, headers, and a 600 cfm carb, he will be up in the 230-240 horse range and low 310s torque wise. This really isnt that far off of what late 70s 400 numbers. It wont be the most powerful plant up steep hills, but it will tug a trailer. Additionally, it is what he has to work with, so best has to be done to make it a decent tow rig.

Another decent cam would be a Comp XE252, or a small Lunati.

2016 Ram 1500 Crew Cab: 5.7, 65RFE, 4.56 gears with locker, Hemifever tuned, AFE intake, 87mm throttle body, JBA headers, 3" Flowmaster exhaust, split to dual 2.5" exits. 13.57 best ET so far.

Searching for new A or B Body Project!

I would venture to guess it has frame extensions in the rear and if so he will need to get them reinforced and most likely have a custom hitch made.
