has anyone ever done just the top and bottom seals and had it work out?
Yes, plenty of times. I get Parts Master kits, never had any issues.

any special tool required? where is parts master sold? appr a little more insight from ya thanks dan
No special tools. the output seal can be a pain on the bench, I remove the reataing clip and run sheet metal srews into the seal and pry it out. In the car I just remove the retaining clip start the car and turn the wheel lock to lock at about 1500 rpm and let pressure do the work. Parts master is a pretty common brand around here sold at a few stores, none are national chains though. I did also get a listing through Advance Auto once for three kits, a upper , a lower , and a master reseal kit but have never used them.

cool i,ll pull it before i remove it from the car.. no engine now so running it isnt an option i guess i,ll fiddle with it this next week appr it dan
If the cars not running pull it out and do it on the bench. If it was it would make it real easy to blow the out put seal.
