Should the #'s on the fender tag on a 68 Roadrunner match the tag on the dash?

No. The VIN is only on the dash. The Shipping Order Number is on the fender tag, rad support, and trunk lip. The Broadcast sheet will match the two numbers.

The 1968 model year is probably the most confusing to most.

It uses the 67 back sales code format for the fender tag.

It does not have the V.I.N. on the fender tag or the hidden body numbers but rather the S.O.# (sales order number) in these places.

The only way to tie the S.O.# and the V.I.N. togather is if you have the BCS, original window sticker, original invoice, or IBM card which will have both of them on these items.

It was a transition year for the V.I.N. being stamped on the engine and trans. The engine (when stamped) was on the drivers side top rear flange of the engine NOT in the same location as the 69-up engines. Many think this was mandated by the Fed. Gov. but it was not. It was a request from the insurance companies to aid in theif recovery, as with the previous years hidden numbers, however using the V.I.N. did not require law enforcement to contact the factory or NICB to compare the V.I.N. and S.O. numbers. So the V.I.N. on the engine and trans was hit or miss throughout the entire model year as gthere was no LAW that required it.
