All I remember was those things were hell to R+R

Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first.
Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Try your questions over at turbododge.com
They are alot of knowledgeable members there who know the Mopar front wheel drives.
Try to find the model number of that transmission. They are usually a 3 digit number beginning with 5. The turbos has 525's and 555's.

Try turbo-mopar.com slightly less idiots there than td.com, slightly. And yes, it's the same transmission as the 4cyls got, just with a mitsu v6 bellhousing pattern. Your trans is the 543, the v6 version of the 523 4cyl trans. And yes, the 3.0 5sp transmissions are hard to find.
You can find the 523 behind 1990-94 2.5L tbi and turbo applications. There's a tag screwed onto the trans with the # on it so you can double check.
As for your 5th gear issue, I don't know what to say other than to try unhooking the trans cables and try manually moving the gear shift levers on the transmission into the 5th gear position so you can determine whether this is a transmission issue or a shifter issue(I have seen some messed with fwd shifters so don't rule this out).
