hi guys i just bought a 49 dodge pilot house truck. its in good shape for a dodge very solid. im wanting to fix it up to drive around and cruise with.
im gonna put a more modern rear end in it but im not sure what to do with the front end. i want to keep the leaf spring suspention other than upgrading the shackles. but i need front disc breakes. what have people done to do this with a straight axle. does someone make one for a ford or chevy with discs thats close and i can make work??

Looks like a great starting point, you plan on keeping the flathead 6 as well?

The trucks were called pilot house because the glass in the cab made the cabs look like the pilot house on large river tugs, paddle wheel boats, and ocean going boats.

I believe www.rustyhope.com has a a disc brake conversion for the beam axle, contact him and see. I've used his kits on a few old Mopars.

I have a 50 (with a 52 nose I believe) that is mounted on an 80 Dodge 4x4 chassis. Mine has a 360 4v 727, full time 4x4, with a 9 1/4" sure grip and a dana 44 front both with 3:55 gears. Gene

thanks everyone. yea i think it will be neet with the original motor and trany. they make a dual carb intake and a header for these motors, and "hot rod cam" who knows what it is for them to. that way it can get out of the way of traffic beter. i just want to be able to stop with the newer cars.

I doubt a flathead 6 could handle a single quad, let alone dual quads. The dual intake mentioned is a pair of one barrel carbs on a welded together manifold. The split exhaust is a factory manifold split in two and capped off, and has another exhaust outlet welded to the end without an outlet. This makes it possible to have dual exhaust. Built up, these motors could make about 140-150 horse power, factory stock, the "big" flathead 6 (251 ci) produced in 58 had a factory rating of 125 hp. That was the highest factory rated flathead 6. The 50 & 51 versions were considerable smaller @ 216 ci and rated @ 95 hp.

These trucks do make nice street rods. Pictured is my 54. It had a 360, 727, 8 3/4 with 3:23 gears. we drove it over 40,000 miles in 5 summers. One of the few hot rods I'd take back, but it would be just as easy to build another.

The rear fenders changed in 53. They went from the round ones like on my blue 4x4 to the longer fenders like on my teal green truck above. The rear fenders from 53 were used through the end of the step side production in 81 or 82 and are the same fenders used on the Little Red pickups. The step side box sides went from an angled top rail and styled stake pockets to flat top rails and straight stake pockets in 56 or 57 and remained unchanged through the end of production as well. Just in case you wondered or were looking....Gene
