I did this tonight while installing the transmission; feel pretty stupid but life goes on. Can I have this welded or is it time to start searching for another block?

Don't feel bad, I've broken a 318 the same way before...small blocks aren't overly robust in that area, it's the price of (relatively) light weight.

In my case I was removing the trans, and I took a chunk of the block with it...it may have already been broken there, don't know.

It can be welded w/o a problem.

I'm sure it can be welded somehow, and the indexing of that dowel is quite important. How'd you do that?

For a 340 or orignal engine I would try to weld it. If it were a 318 or 360 I would look for a new block but that's me. If possible re-attach the side supports. Unfortunatly, it won't fit if you have headers.

I was tightening the bolts from the engine side of the transmission and snugging up the top transmission to engine bolts. I had about 3/8" gap all around and all of a sudden it snapped. Nobody's fault but my own; it is good to know that I can have it welded.

The side supports will go back on as I am using the stock manifolds. I just had the engine
freshened up so I am kind of bummed right now. I bought the car from the original owner about 10 years ago, it's not the numbers block in the car as the original owner blew the engine in 1972 and put in another 70 date coded block.
