I have a '73 Charger, ps, auto on column with a shot rag joint 3 inches of play in steering wheel(I can move the coupler side to side by hand 1/2 inch) and I have a nos replacement. After unbolting the column from under the dash and floor and disconnecting the column harness and shift linkage, what is next? Is there a pin near the steering box that has to come out or just pull the column? I can see a little of the shaft spline between the coupler and steering box. If there is a pin, do I tap it out from top or bottom side? I also have the kit(seal, shoes, spring, pins, cap) to fix the smaller upper coupling that the cap popped off and is bone dry.

Yes there is a pin right where the coupler goes over the splined input shaft of the power steering box. You pound it out with a punch. You can pound it out through either side. I've had mine off a couple times, it's no big deal. You can see the top of the pin(it's hollow on the inside). Disregard the arrow in the picture.

Pound the pin out and the steering column will pull right off.

Pound out the pin and the coupler will slide right off? heh heh heh.. Yeah, sure it will! Sometimes it isn't that easy. It has been there since NIXON was president, for crissakes! I would try a healthy spritz of WD 40 around the splines, and give it a few love taps with a Ball Peen Ferd tool, then try to pry it off.
Okay, now how do you get the new coupler on without mangling the thin metal clip? That thing is a POS design.

Since it's a 73 the rag joint should be next to the steering box.

You can drive the pin out that holds the connector for the rag joint to the steering box or if room allows just unbolt the rag joint from the connector that is on the steering box.

Either way should work fine. If you unbolt it make sure the steering wheel is straight up and the wheels are straight when you bolt it back in. They can be bolted in to set the steering wheel upside down IIRC. If you drive out the pin it will only go back on the steering box one way.
