Hey all. Posting from Pick & Pull...Gotta love the laptop and wi-fi. I was looking for Dakota manual bellhousings, but I found a 6 lug '94 Dakota with sure grip 8.25 rear. I know '97 and later units had some differences. The 8.25 in my Duster is an earlier ('75) open diff A-body unit. 1) Will the carriers interchange from my '75 to a '94. 2)Is the factory unit rebuildable? Thanks.

As far as I know, the axle spline count changed in 97. Should work in your Duster

1) The later ones from Ma Mopar are junk! We changed them like mad at the dealership.
2) Yes the center will interchange up to the point the splines change. I have an Auburn diff from a Jeep Liberty in my 74 Duster =) $78 off Ebay.
The only thing you need to be aware of is to use the diff bearings correct for your housing. Mopar changed the outer diameter of the diff bearings around '76

I have done this install twice... Cool mod, huh? Saves cash. First time I found an Auburn Diff. Second time I lucked out and came across a Power lock style with clutches and springs. I had it rebuilt and installed in a 8 1/4 axle from a 74 Duster. I have it in my 67 Dart. 3.55 gears and sure grip for about $225. Can I get a HELL YEAH!?
bet you used a spacer and longer bolts

I don't understand what you wrote.
I recall having trouble trying to get a set of later 3:55 gears to work with early 8 1/4 suregrip... there were major clearance issues...In order for it to work I had to buy much newer suregrip carrier..

Oh....I thought you were making a joke, as if I tried to put 2 differentials in the same rear end at the same time... LONGER bolts! heh heh heh, I get it NOW ! Wait, that wasn't a joke? I guess I look like an idiot now. The Sure Grip diffs I pulled came from the square body Dakota trucks, whatever year those were. Like I wrote, the first unit was cone type and non rebuildable. I got lucky on the second one. They both had 3.55 gears, the same as what I had. I had a local axle guy do the work, and the diff cover was bolted on with silicone RTV in place of a gasket, so I never looked to see if there was a spacer in there. I doubt it, since the ratios were the same.

I can't help you there- The Auburn diff I have is aftermarket of course, and the 3.55's were from a Jeep Cherokee also off Ebay ($32 shipped)

I had a spacer when running 4.56's with my Dana, never heard of one for a 8.25. Far as I knew only the 2.45 and maybe 2.76 had the oddball carrier.

Well it all depends on what you are going to do with it...
In my case the car will have nothing stronger than a stout 318 so the investment of $240 (ring and pinion, bearings & "posi") is well spent considering what you would drop for an upgrade to a big bolt pattern 8.75 with 3.55 shure grip.
I'm fairly sure I saved at least $500-$750 not moving over to a 8.75.
More funds that can be spent on that 5.2 Magnum motor upgrade ;-)

Oh, one other thing, the new rear has a sensor on it.
How does that sensor work? Does it know the rear brakes are locked when the diff abruptly tries to quit turning?
Something like that.
