Anyone done this? This would be for an E-body that is going to be converted to fuel injection. I know that you can buy new tanks with a pump already installed from XV Motorsports and other vendors. However they are a bit pricy at $850. I alredy have a new tank, and I have seen in tank fuel pump kits (the same ones that some of these vendors use) for about $200-250. To me it looks like a straight forward installation, are there any tricks? What about internal baffles in the tank, etc? I don't want to use an external pump.

I have done a couple of them in my hotrods, one of which is an e-body with efi, and yes, you need baffels and a sump for accel and decel, otherwise you starve the pump. Foam in the tank is not an option with efi pumps either. Mine sucked all that crap right thru the filter....My tanks were all custom, and $850 if it includes the pump lines, and filter is a deal if it all good quality stuff.

I forget where I got this pic but it is of a '90 Corvette pump installed on a stock Mopar tank unit.

I've worked the same issue on a FI E body. Started with a stock tank and external pump. That worked but not great. In addition to noise, the A1000 pump just doesn't like to have to suck through a stock style pickup - even 1/2". With a smaller pump it would work better. Without baffles and a sump keeping at least 1/2 tank is recommended and less than 1/4 is really bad since the pump will suck air with fuel slosh and possibly cavitatate. The same limitation would probably apply to the smaller pump mounted on a stock pickup in the pic.

Basically the stock system was designed for a very forgiving diaphram pump and a carb with fuel reserve in the bowls to handle momentary interuptions. Its not the best for EFI which is much less forgiving.

Sumping the tank with an external pump works well but reduces clearance in the rear and still keeps the external pump. Folks have had great results with the sump but I just don't like the lines hanging out there.

In my case, I finally broke down and bought a tank with pump from Rick's HR shop. I'll post some pics when I get it in a few days.

Do you happen to know the approximate cost on that, and what all do you get for your buck?

I found this kit. It uses a Walbro pump. From the pictures on their website it looks like Modern Muscle uses the same parts. I don't know if they install any addional baffles? I can certainly do the installation.

I am looking into these guys regarding a stamped steel, baffled, internal pump tank for fuel injection. They even have replacement straps.

Depending on how crazy you want to get, this is the solution that a bunch of the megasquirt-EFI (read: budget) guys are using, and it's most likely what I'll be using since my tank is plastic:

It's effectively a surge tank. A low pressure pump supplies the tank (via the port on the right hand side of the picture) with fuel, filling the tank. The T at the top is an overflow that sends excess fuel back to the tank. From the surge tank, via the port on the bottom, the high volume pump sends fuel to the system. Return from the system (TBI or injector rails) is the second line in the T fitting at the top of the surge tank. It's not the prettiest alternative, and maybe not even viable for a car with the underside of it loaded up with stuff, but this application (and mine also) is a Ramcharger.

What was the cost of that retro-fit set-up you're showing? Meaning the weld-in sump and pump unit? I cannot seem to locate it on their site...

i think the modern muscle setup was around $550 installed into a tank that I supplied(also included a ss connect line to motor)

. They have listings on ebay, and they can also supply the tank. He was great to work with.

Out of curiosity, how does it get fuel into the sump area? It appears to be a cylinder. I assume I can't see but that there are a few holes around the base? Thanks, this kit looks interesting. How tall is it overall to the flat? My van's tank is just over 9" tall, hoping that I might be able to put 1 or 2 things like this into it (2 255 lph walbro in tank pumps for my set up, want a 1000 hp capable fuel system, though probably only going for 500 whp EFI & Slight Turbo setup). Thanks for the info.

In a PM it was stated there's an overlapping slot along the side of the cylinder portion that lets the fuel in, and inherently keeps fuel from sloshing out under acceleration and braking! Clever design that could possibly be replicated by the do-it-yourself-er... *thinks*

The rock-valley setup looks nice though but for $295 for the cheapest kit... wonder how good of a fuel pump comes on it
