no gas should be flowing through the booster at idle. Something is wrong. Too much fuel pressure, floats way too high, or sunk completely, that's where I'd start.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

So actually it seems to be fine now, not pushing any fuel through the booster. As for the idle, it was still really bad until my friend came over and gave it a good rev. I had done the same earlier this afternoon, mind you, and didn't get the same results he did. He ended up getting it to idle just fine after that one good rev I wonder if something was stuck in a fuel passage or something...
for the record though, my fuel pressure is 6lbs and the floats seem to be okay.

I tend to agree with RR there. Probably wouldn't hurt to pull the top and clean out the needle/seat and passageways to them. A number of years ago, I bought a used Ebrock 600 off Ebay. The clown thought it was a good idea to sandblast it to "clean it up".
I spent some time cleaning it once I got it. Running it now on my Cuda.

That is a fairly common problem with new gas in old cars. Get used to pulling the top of the carb off at least once a year to clean it out.
Is this a normal consistency though? It looks like fish roe!

I believe so. Unfortunately, I think it's mixed with water too.
