hi
I have this loud squeal too, in the background. It's coming from the fuel system, but I have no idea what it is. Any suggestions?

(you might not be able to see it, but the booster is dripping steadily at idle, maybe two drops per second)

no gas should be flowing through the booster at idle. Something is wrong. Too much fuel pressure, floats way too high, or sunk completely, that's where I'd start.

So actually it seems to be fine now, not pushing any fuel through the booster. As for the idle, it was still really bad until my friend came over and gave it a good rev. I had done the same earlier this afternoon, mind you, and didn't get the same results he did. He ended up getting it to idle just fine after that one good rev I wonder if something was stuck in a fuel passage or something...

for the record though, my fuel pressure is 6lbs and the floats seem to be okay.

A minute piece of grit holding a float open & him revving it used up fuel, the level dropped along w the float and it flushed out along w revving it agitating the eng. I would change the filter.

I tend to agree with RR there. Probably wouldn't hurt to pull the top and clean out the needle/seat and passageways to them. A number of years ago, I bought a used Ebrock 600 off Ebay. The clown thought it was a good idea to sandblast it to "clean it up".

I spent some time cleaning it once I got it. Running it now on my Cuda.

So I never really had this figured out. In fact, it got worse: while I was driving, after a hard acceleration, it would die on me while I was still moving. So today I decided to take the top hat of the Edelbrock off the carb body. And it's a good thing I did; these pictures will tell all:

What the hell is this stuff? Dirt, gasoline, and water, as far as I can tell...

How could this happen, you ask? Use a plastic FRAM fuel filter and find out...

The plastic bottom distorted and opened up, allowing dirt right through the filter

I realize I shouldn't have that much dirt in my fuel system, but this was before I had cleaned out my tank. Now it's cleaned and I am putting some water-be-gone in my fuel tank to clear out all the water that may be in there.

I have cleaned the carb and hopefully this will fix my problems

Sugar?

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

That what I was thinking I never seen rust or dirt look like that in a carb....

If you still have some of the crud put it in some warm water and see if it is possible that it will eventually dissolve.

If I had any left I'd try it. I cleaned the you-know-what outta the carb last night. If I see any more though, i will definitely test it.

That is a fairly common problem with new gas in old cars. Get used to pulling the top of the carb off at least once a year to clean it out.

Is this a normal consistency though? It looks like fish roe!

I believe so. Unfortunately, I think it's mixed with water too.

AndyF hit the nail on the head there. Your new fuels with ethanol in them and possibly the water b gone you used causes the varnish in the fuel lines and tanks to become brittle and flake off. When I moved to the midwest for a year I was having to pull and clean out my carb every couple of weeks! Looks like brown sugar. Also you might want to try moving your filter away from a heat source!
