An afb is actually a pretty simple carb, just note carefully how everyhing goes when you take it apart. Be sure to get it clean, and make sure all the passages are clear. The rebuild kit will have specs for the float levels etc when you put it back together. I have always had good luck rebuilding afbs and avs. Not done as well with thermoquads, but its a good carb when you get it right.

2 things I do is save every old gasket during teardown to be sure I replace them with the exact same one as kits sometimes have several & some of them look real similar but are different & I measure each setting(float level)etc as I tear down the carb that way I have a baseline to work off of when going back together because a carb will need to be gone thru but the settings dont change hardly at all & if I find I need to make drastic changes in settings (ie float level) that means I am probably looking at the wrong specs. If you have your own bucket of carb soup soak the pieces for a couple of days.jot down a few notes on which screws go where etc on dissassembly, several minutes doing that saves ALOT of guesswork later.

Ziplock baggies and Sharpies are good ideas.
