A friend and I are debating on whether or not Mopars (Challengers/Cudas) were painted certain colors in batches. My position is that 20-50 cars would be painted Black, then they would change out the 50-gal drum of paint to White or Red and they would paint until the ran out of paint, etc... otherwise it would be very wasteful to paint by special order.
Anyone know ?
Thank You

OK OK OK I was wrong. I can accept that

Now I'm curious; How would a factory that built (just a guess) 1000 cars a day, paint them all different colors ? Wouldn't that create havoc and delays from changing out the paint guns and hoses, etc... ? I would have thought they painted blue until they ran out of blue paint, then green, etc..

I believe it, just curious what the process was.

I imagine they had different guns for different colors, and just picked up the particular gun depending on the order?

There is an article somewhere that describes the process, but I read it long ago.

In a nutshell & from my hazy memory.......

The paint was in huge vats. The same guns & hoses were used but there was a manifold system that allowed the paint color to be changed.

Paint a car, switch colors, clear the gun until the new color starts to flow, & paint the next car.

This is one reason some cars have been found with another color under the actual color the whole car was painted. Some guns were cleared by spraying the trunk or engine bay.

Almost explains my buddies Challenger coded for EB7 but was FC7 in the trunk, engine compartment & full interior....

In the heavy duty truck world most every cab/sleeper is different from the previous pair.
The same guns/robots are used, the lines are simply purged with a measured amount (controlled now by software) with solvent (cheap reducer) before switching over to the paint. There are no issues with 'mixed' colors

Must be a K-Whopper guy. Are they still using Imron or have they switched to something else? I worked at Pete in Denton in the 1990s. The car companies have switched to water-born paints since then.
