Take off the valve cover and start the engine.
This may be a stupid question, but won't oil go flying everywhere?

If you are worried about that then just cut the top out of a valve cover and bolt it on. You can then watch the rockers work and not get oil everwhere. Oil won't squirt all over and it will drain back down the returns as normal.
I guess my only reservation about it is because I've never done it before. If it's just a little oil that gets spray around, I don't care. It it starts gushing out, I don't imagine that's a good thing. Never mind the fact that I don't have a spare set of valvecovers.

not likely an oiling prob. Pull the VC and start w a good visual inspection & see what you uncover

yea pat just pull the covers and run it a short time to see if it oiling them
you wont have that much of a mess for a short time
look to see if the are dry,if they are dry pull the shaft and check the rockers for scuffing on the shaft
