I have some parts I need to clean the surface of. What I am working on is the steel covers and doors from my heater box. What do I use to clean them?? I bought a cabinet media blaster, but what do I buy to clean them with??

Be very careful with sand. The sandbox sand that you get at Home Depot and Lowe's is silica based and is very bad for your lungs, Silicosis.
Plus generally contains moisture - clogs up blaster nozzles.
Do as Bill says...glass beads. Thats what I used on my heater box and lotsa other stuff.

What works best for removing paint and rust? I bought a cheap bag of silica sand from the local hardware store, but when I opened it up the sand is super fine and doesn't have much bite when shoot it with my home sandblaster. Would I be better off wtih a coarser sand, the glass or the walnut shells?
Black Beauty from Menards ($10.00/50 lb. bag) for that kind of work. Its coal slag, cheap and effective.
Walnut shells is for very gentile work. I used it on an alternator case, and it hardly touched it. Glass beads is the best for cleaning aluminum - pot metal etc.
