I thought they were serrated flange nuts?

You might try an auto body supply/paint store. They used to have those things, but I don't think the auto makers have used them recently. The ones I had were thin stamped sheetmetal and self-threading.

It's a dry heat
there was a flat non washer pal nut holding the assemblies together,Similar to the one on top of the front shocks - then a captive conical washer nut holding the assy to the body visible from inside the trunk.

both are 10-24 machine thread ,..Bad news is I've never been able to locate a source for the correct flat palnut. AND the 'almost' correct conical washer nut has been discontinued from the manufacturer.
This is the closest one that SHOULD be on a 70 Challenger ( but should be yellow zinc di-chromate plated ) now no longer avail. AFAIK

one on the left is the only thing avail today thats even close to OE to hold the assy in.
the one on the right is the 'same style' as what holds the assemblies together

Not to change the subject but pal nuts were used on many engines as a locking nut on the rod bolts.

No way !!! The low grade of nut used to hold in a taillight assy wouldn't take the stress in a rotating assy. Likewise, the factory would not have used high strength (more expensive) rod nuts to hold in taillights!

Pal nuts WERE used as lock nuts to the rod nut. That is where they got the name palnut.
