Ok to keep a long story short, it looks like the dowel pins on the driver side deck are slightly longer than the ones on the passenger side. The cylinder head dowle hole depth is .303" at its shallowest. The dowel pin height on the driver side is .297" (no head gasket). I'm using a .027" Cometic.

So do I need to cut dowels down or will the gasket give me enough clearance?

easiest way to find out is set the head on the block with no gasket and see if it seats properly. if it does then you'll be good to go with a gasket in there.

If you are worried about them, cut them down. As long as they go through the gasket and into the head enough to line them up, they are long enough.
Peace of mind is a good thing.
