What is allowed for thrust bearing clearance?

Does anyone make oversize thrust bearings?

Anyone know what the size on the crank should be?

Thank you

#1 .004 to .010 is normal. #2 You'll have to look for your motor, probally not, sorry #4 Which motor, year and crankshaft size, stock or undersized

the engine is a 496ci

Block is a 68 440 stock block.

Crank is a old Bryant billit.

Engine has been together and running for years.

by my quick checks i have almost .015 (with old thrust bearing) dont have a new bearing to see if it was crushed any.

Any idea what the outside to outside of a thrust bearing should be?

Im gonna check it better tonight.

I went out in the shop and looked in one of my Mopar service manuals, they don't show the width of the thrust surfaces on any of the motors I did measure several sets of main bearings, new and used and it looks like the width of the crankshaft should be between 2.218 and 2.220. The new Cleveite thust main bearing I.D.width is 2.225, several used one, Federal Moguls, are right at 2.223 and 2.224. IHTHs, BTW, it is not uncommon to find thrust bearing surface wear on a old top fuel crank, or any crank that had a clutch attached to it

The thrust width should be .100" , had this issue when i balloned the convertor which took out thrust bearing along with #1 & 5 main bearings , end float was .015" , had the crank machined & a new thrust bearing was sent to a guy who added another .012" to the thrust face (white metal) , all is good & got to keep the callies 4.625" crank , endfloat is now .005".

ACL make a wider thrust bearing, but the catch is they don't make it in standard size, they only do it in +.020" or maybe +.030". Journal size that is.

Hmmm So .015 is way to much? I know max is suppose to be .010 so i guess im answering my own question.

So ACL does make a wider thrust bearing... how much wider???

If the motor is running now run it until it gets to .025 or above, and then fix the crankshaft by welding or chroming the thrust surfaces If the motor is aprt now fix it now

Too much endfloat will have the crank chamfer the main bearings , before i fixed the crank/thrust bearing i had to champfer all main bearing so the radius on main journal would clear the bearings , add to this the "CLUNK" when you shut her down. , not forgetting cam endfloat will move around too , will get away with a gear drive but not a chain , spark lead would be all over the place , plus the lifters riding too close to the edge of lobes , was a nightmare.
