Just broke in my new VooDoo cam with new lifters. It seems I have either a lifter/rocker noise or exhaust leak. the ticking is more of a dull tick not a real high pitched tick and it starts coming on at 2000 rpm and not before.
What should I start looking for?
Thanks.

Take off a valve cover and start the engine and with a hammer handle put pressure on the push rod end of the rocker arms. If it is a lifter or rocker noise it will quit when you hit the right one.
Or pour a little oil into the carb and the smoke will show up a leaky manifold or exhaust

Messy is right! Everything checked out allright. Lifters are good AND I can't seem to find a exhaust leak anywhere.
I have to ask, what about a cam or main bearing? Would that make noise all the time or just at higher RPM's?

Is this a new rebuild or did you only change/breakin a new cam/lifters? I'm assuming new rebuild otherwise it'd point directly to the replaced parts especially the lifters

A main will loose oil pressure and rarely knock that is noticeable and when it does it is a dull rap. cam bearings will loose your pressure too and no noise. Fuel pump arm???

does it go away on coast? if so, it's an exhaust leak.

I had the same dilemma, I used a piece of 3/8" rubber fuel line as a stethoscope and was able to pin point the exhaust leak in minutes. Some of the best advise I recieved here on Moparts.

Ok I went out for a run and like I mentioned earlier the tick comes on at about 2000 and I noticed it changes pitch just a little bit. When I let of the gas the sounds does go away as far as I could tell. Tomorrow I'll start checking header gaskets and the collector gaskets too.
Thanks for everyones replys!

if running headers, dont over look some of the factory welds and the 4 into 1 colletor

I have found a bunch of header will leak there..i only use cheap ones though

also look them over good for cracks in the "whole length" of each tube

with most flat mannys to head seal I use the copper rtv over the gaskets that come in whole engine kits (let cure over night)

also do this on bad/warped header flanges to head with header gaskets ( results will vary )

now mine does have a heck of a clatter that is the lifters till the oil hits it some times on start up...but can hear it clearly...

after running you only hear it in the cab

been chasing it for a long time on mine with some worn out engines over the yrs

I'm running cheap headers myself. One more thing I can look at.
