Ok guys,, heres a lil insite...
in late 72 and early 73. I worked for a company called Convoy Company in Kent Wa. Convoy was the forwarder of the new AMC, Ford, and Chrysler vehicles when they were sent to the dealers. Forwarders were used everywhere..
The vehicles would come to us on railcars, they wre unloaded and then we processed them.
The first part of the processing was a bath, yes they would come in filthy. Some would have to be ran through the car wash more than once to get clean..
Next the cars that were coded for undercoating went through the undercoating bay...wheelwel or complete jobs Sorry guys but those cars came off the factory line and railcars like a babys bottom,,, nothing on them...didnt you ever wonder why there is no undercoating above the gas tank?
The cars were then masked off , undercoated and then sent to the detail bays.
The cars then were vacumed out, windows washed ect. Wanna ask where a lot of build sheets went?
The cars then went to a mechanic who double checked all lighting, heater, radio ext to be working.
The cars were then parked in their respective order to be transported to the dealers.
We processed thousands of cars for Wa, Id, Mt and the fridged state of Ak...
So, here's a couple pics that point towards undercoating applied at the factory, not a separate facility. Obviously you were there where it was done off line, but I wonder if it was for certain scenarios or some special circumstances... or perhaps later years, I don't know, I could speculate & hypothesize for days... lol So to be clear, I'm not doubting what you're saying, but it seems there's more to it.
Rick
(to the original poster, sorry for steering the topic a bit off course!!)
Survivor 70 GTX. Masking tape undercoated over before seats were installed. Front hole had the tape with undercoating still on it.
Same car, interesting masking areas, as if to keep undercoating off of areas where the body would sit on carriages.
This is a J55 optioned 71 Hemi Cuda, note total lack of undercoating on the exhaust, yet excellent coverage of undercoating directly above it at a straight-on spray angle.
'66 Coronet. Obvious undercoating at the stage before body drop onto drivetrain.
Same as the Coronet with this '68 Charger.

There's dozens of reasons that could explain this... Maybe Chrysler didn't start the outsourcing until 1972? or Maybe certain assembly plants weren't equipped to undercoat so they out sourced? In my 26+ years of restoring Mopars this is the First time of heard of such out sourcing and like Rick, I'm not doubting it, just trying to get my head around the idea

....it was also factory applied option.
Hey Barry! What better than an assembly line photo that shows the process being performed?

My answer is - "None". Anyone else?
If you are buying his car then that would be one of the correct answers. If not, the answer could be different for the person who actually purchases his car. Things like "value", "worth", "condition", etc.... are all relative terms and can only be answered by an individual's personal perspective. There is no definitive answer! In the end it doesn't matter what "anyone else" thinks or feels about an aspect of his car! Beauty (and value) is in the eye of the beholder.
