Long story short, I'm swapping a 440 into an 88 dodge w150. I was going to try to keep the original wiring harness, and with it the original style alternator. Its the Chrysler style (not sure which amp, I assume 90). Its too big to fit in the original style 440 bracket. The manual says it is regulated by the SMEC (computer?). If this is the case, couldn't I swap in an earlier style alt? I was concerned about not having an external voltage reg, but it sounds like the alt I have now doesn't have one either. Any comments or experience on this? Thanks, James

A common repair is to add an external regulator when the factory one fails in the computer. You won't have any problem adding an earlier alternator and regulator.

Just add in the old 70 and up style regulator and wiring, you can get the connectors from NAPA.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

even the single field regulator will work.
running a 5.9 magnum with the 65 vr and it charges pretty good.

still does the dim and bright thing at idle, but works fine at speed.
